“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.”
National Curriculum for Physical Education
At Cavendish CE Primary School, we recognise the vital role that Physical Education plays in supporting pupils’ physical development, health, wellbeing and confidence. Our PE curriculum is guided by the National Curriculum objectives, ensuring that learning is progressive, inclusive and ambitious for all pupils.
Our Approach to PE
We use the National Curriculum for Physical Education to inform our curriculum decisions, ensuring that pupils develop the fundamental movement skills, physical competence and positive attitudes needed to lead active, healthy lives.
Across the school, PE lessons are planned to:
-
develop agility, balance, coordination and strength
-
promote teamwork, cooperation and fair play
-
build confidence through performance and participation
-
encourage perseverance, resilience and enjoyment of physical activity
Pupils are given regular opportunities to practise and apply skills across a range of physical activities, supporting both physical development and personal growth.
Curriculum Coverage and Progression
Our PE curriculum ensures that pupils experience a broad and balanced range of activities, including:
-
games and team sports
-
gymnastics and dance
-
athletics
-
outdoor and adventurous activities (where appropriate)
Skills and knowledge are revisited and built upon over time so that pupils develop increasing control, confidence and understanding as they move through the school.
Inclusion, Health and Wellbeing
PE at Cavendish is inclusive and accessible. Lessons are adapted to ensure that all pupils can participate and succeed, regardless of starting point or ability. We place a strong emphasis on positive attitudes, cooperation and self-belief, helping children to feel confident and motivated.
Through PE, pupils also learn about the importance of healthy lifestyles, physical activity and personal wellbeing — supporting their development both in and beyond school.
Why PE Matters
Physical Education contributes significantly to pupils’ overall development. As highlighted by Ofsted, a well-designed curriculum supports pupils’ physical and personal development alongside academic learning.
By following the National Curriculum and providing high-quality PE experiences, we aim to inspire pupils to enjoy physical activity, develop lifelong healthy habits, and grow in confidence as active learners.
