Science at Cavendish CE Primary School
“Science is the process that takes us from confusion to understanding.”
— Brian Greene
At Cavendish CE Primary School, science begins with curiosity. We want our children to wonder, question, investigate and discover more about the world around them. Through science, pupils learn to observe carefully, think critically, test ideas and explain what they find.
Science sits closely alongside our school vision: We Learn. We Love. We Belong. We want every child to see themselves as a scientist — someone whose questions matter, whose ideas are valued and whose discoveries help them understand the world more deeply.
Our Science Curriculum
We use White Rose Science to support the teaching and learning of science across the school. This provides a clear, carefully sequenced curriculum that helps children build knowledge and skills over time.
Our science curriculum covers the key areas of the National Curriculum, including plants, animals including humans, materials, living things and their habitats, forces, light, sound, electricity, earth and space, and seasonal change.
Children revisit important scientific ideas as they move through the school, helping them to remember more, make meaningful links and deepen their understanding.
Working Scientifically
Alongside scientific knowledge, children are taught how to work scientifically. They learn to ask questions, make observations, plan and carry out investigations, use equipment safely, record findings, look for patterns and explain what they have discovered.
We encourage children to think like scientists by wondering, predicting, testing, reflecting and using scientific vocabulary with confidence.
Outdoor Learning and Our Local Environment
As a small village school with wonderful outdoor spaces, we make good use of our grounds and local area to bring science to life. Children learn through first-hand experiences, including observing plants and animals, exploring habitats, noticing seasonal changes and developing care for the natural world.
Our woodland, field and outdoor learning opportunities help pupils understand that science is not just something that happens in a classroom — it is all around us.
Science and Our Christian Vision
Science at Cavendish helps children develop awe and wonder. We encourage pupils to appreciate the beauty, complexity and richness of the world, to ask big questions and to recognise their responsibility to care for creation and one another.
Through science, our children learn that discovery is powerful, questions are important and learning about the world helps us value our place within it.
